It was a victory that was the culmination of nearly 15 years of hard work and determination when Ericka Dunlap was crowned Miss America in Atlantic City on September 20, 2004. Just a few months earlier, she secured another piece of history by being chosen as the first, and only to date, African American women to wear the Miss Florida crown.

The night of the nationally telecast pageant, the viewing audience at home was privy to the fact that Dunlap had received the highest scores in both talent and evening gown. The was not known to Dunlap herself, and the “Miss Florida” who had remained poised and elegant throughout the evening, threw her composure to the wind and gasped, nearly fell to her knees, and held her hands to her face almost in disbelief.

For a crowning moment that is sure to be one of the most memorable in the Pageant’s history, Dunlap will long be remembered. (You can enjoy the video
of her crowning, to your left.)

She dedicated her Year of Service as the national spokesperson of one of the world’s largest sources of scholarship opportunities for women, to her platform entitled “United We Stand. Divided We Fall Behind: Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion.”

Through over 100 speaking engagements and keynote addresses, she was able to share her vision for a more unified and culturally diverse America. She used the title of Miss America 2004 as a megaphone to share the tools needed to move beyond mere tolerance and move towards embracing the diversity in communities while establishing an awareness of the importance of inclusion.

This is a subject for which she remains passionate and is still a sought-after speaker on the topic. Her scholarship earnings as Miss Florida and Miss America totaled over $60,000, which she used to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Central Florida in 2005.
